Ko wai tatau (who are we?)

Te Whaanga means, ‘The lagoon’

For Maori, the ancestral people of New Zealand, Te Whaanga proved to be an ideal settlement. It’s sheltered bay provided landing for waka (canoe) and respite when repairs needed to be made to nets, tools and weapons. The current owners are descendants of those who first walked these lands. They invite you to share in their experience of being nurtured by the ocean, revived by the natural landscapes and replenished by the peace of seclusion.

Our Maunga (Mountain)

Maori hold a sacred relationship with mountains.  We consider it a privilege that Te Whaanga Resort and Spa nestles below Karioi, a 2-million-year-old extinct volcano.  Many trails lead to the summit.  Explore our native fauna and flora as you hike and experience the beauty of Karioi for yourself.

Our ocean

Our Moana (Ocean)

Maori tradition teaches that the ocean is the origin of all life, a spiritual entity integral to our identity. It is seen as both a provider of resources and a sacred space. Our waterways are precious taonga (treasures) that nurture and nourish us.

Our Whanau (Family)

The origins of the Ngati Koata people stem from this very place and it is from this tribe that the current owners of the property trace their lineage. Photos of their tupuna (ancestors) take pride of place at Te Whaanga Retreat and Spa. We like to think that as they did in generations past, they still vigilantly watch over the land and its manuhiri (special guests).
